New NQY Flight to Support Growing Marine Renewables Sector

24.02.11

Regional airline Air Southwest is launching a new weekday link from Newquay to Aberdeen.

Air Southwest commercial director Mike Coombes said: “We expect this new link to be especially popular with business travellers in the marine and energy sectors who often go from one end of the country to another and need the speed and convenience of air travel.”

The new service has been welcomed by ship repair company A&P Falmouth, which has a growing offshore marine renewable energy business.

MD Peter Child said: “Aberdeen is a growing focal point for marine renewable energy activity, especially offshore wind, which is a fast-growing market for the A&P Group. This new link means our Falmouth-based renewables team will be able to access these markets in a matter of hours without wasting a day travelling by road or rail.”

Al Titterington, managing director of Newquay Cornwall Airport, added: “This is a pleasing announcement as it creates a valuable new business link between Cornwall and Scotland. This flight will be welcomed by the business communities, particularly those operating in the marine and energy sectors. This further demonstrates Air Southwest’s commitment to developing its air services from Cornwall.”

The service will operate twice a day from Monday, February 28.

The announcement follows the recent agreement between NQY and the Ministry of Defence (MOD), to a first in the country deal for a two and a half month flight training scheme.

Mr. Titterington said: “The use of the airport for flight training makes sense as the long runway and uncongested airspace is ideal for this type of activity. The strong relationship between the Airport and the MoD has been maintained and hopefully this agreement will create further opportunities for military flight operations at Newquay.”

The agreement between the MoD and Newquay Cornwall Airport will run until April 30.
