Lynher Dairies win double gold at world cheese awards
Cornish cheese producer Lynher Dairies Cheese Company Ltd has scooped two gold medals at the annual World Cheese Awards in London.
The winning cheeses - Yarg Cornish Cheese and Yarg Wild Garlic Cornish Cheese - were among 135 rewarded with the top accolade after 120 experts from around the world judged a total of 1,542 cheeses.
According to organisers, standards were higher than ever this year at the world's most prestigious international cheese event held at Taste of London, the capital's top food and drink festival, in Regent's Park. Entries were received from as far afield as the USA, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. A French ewe's milk cheese called Ossau Iraty from the region of Pays Basque in France walked away with the coveted title of World Champion.
Lynher Dairies Cheese Company Ltd is based on two sites, Pengreep Dairy in Ponsanooth and Netherton Farm near Liskeard and produces seven different cheeses. Yarg Cornish Cheese is a bright, creamy cheese wrapped in distinctive mould-ripened nettles while Wild Garlic Yarg is wrapped in wild garlic leaves giving the cheese a gorgeous pungent kick.
Co-director Catherine Mead said: "We were delighted to receive not one but two top awards in this prestigious competition. The champion cheese was a French one so we feel we have done Cornwall proud in achieving the top mark for a British cheese. It was great to be holding our own in competition with a vast array of cheeses from around the world."
