Peninsula Dental School Takes Major Step Forward
£11.5m investment for dental care in Cornwall
The Peninsula Dental School in Truro has taken a major step forward with news that planning permission has been granted for the development of its new headquarters at the Knowledge Spa site. Contractors have been appointed to develop this state-of-the-art dental education facility funded through investment from the European Convergence Programme managed by the South West Regional Development Agency.
The facility represents almost £12m of investment for Truro and Cornwall County. It is estimated that the Peninsula Dental School in Truro will, when fully functioning, be able to treat up to 128 patients a day.
Building work is expected to begin within the next two weeks and construction will be carried out by Interserve Health.
Rail link
Services on the rail branch line between Truro, Penryn and Falmouth
are set for major improvements next year. Cornwall County
Council has announced an agreement with Network Rail and First
Great Western to develop the Truro - Falmouth branch line, making
it possible for trains to pass one another. This means the
frequency of train services could, potentially, double by next
summer. Work is expected to begin on site in October and the new
timetable will commence in May 2009.
The scheme will be delivered thanks to an overall investment of
£7.8m, including £4.67m from the EU Convergence fund, £2.5m from
Cornwall County Council and £600,000 from Network Rail.
This investment forms a key part of the overall transport strategy
identified for the Truro area, which also includes the successful
Park & Ride service rolled out this summer.
