That's MERiFIC!

07.09.11

Next week sees the official launch of the Marine Energy in Far Peripheral and Island Communities (MERiFIC) project at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth, following a long awaited collaboration between Cornwall and Brittany.

The MERiFIC project aims to increase the adoption of marine energy across two regions, Cornwall and Finistere, along with the island communities of le Parc Naturel Marin d’Iroise and the Isles of Scilly.

Lead by Cornwall Council and including partners such as Plymouth and Exeter Universities and the Cornwall Marine Network, they will work together to identify the opportunities and issues faced by these communities in taking advantage of marine renewable energy sources.

The aim is to develop tool kits and resources which can then be used by similar communities around the world.

The project will develop and roll out joint activities between the regions and the island communities, looking at issues such as marine energy resources assessment and mapping; policy issues and potential barriers to marine energy development; business and commercial opportunities for island and mainland communities; community interaction on the appropriate infrastructure and community and stakeholder discussions with key groups such as the fishing industry, wave farm developers and other investors.

The project will bring in 1.1 million of ERDF into the South West.
