Cornwall Pure Business celebrates success at 'I'm Glad I Came to Cornwall' Club event
On the 3rd of December, Cornwall Pure Business celebrated the relocation of 126 dynamic new businesses to Cornwall through a project that generated an additional £32 million for the Cornish economy and almost 800 jobs since 2004.Over 60 relocated businesses and business support organisations enjoyed the 'I'm Glad I Came to Cornwall' Club event, co-sponsored by Coodes Solicitors and Worldwide Financial Planning, at St Michael's Hotel & Spa in Falmouth.
The event's guest speaker was Andrew Holland - Chairman of the project's Steering Group, Director and General Manager of PALL, Newquay, and winner of this year's Cornwall Business Award for Business Leader of the Year. Andrew highlighted the wide range of support Cornwall Pure Business and its partner organisations have provided to businesses looking to relocate to Cornwall as well as assisting those that have already made the move.
Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Objective One Partnership Office, said "One of the ways to regenerate and strengthen our economy is to attract new quality business. Cornwall Pure Business was one of a raft of successful projects which made Cornwall THE place to establish and grow successful businesses".
"Other projects include Combined Universities in Cornwall and its business outreach initiatives such as Unlocking Cornish Potential - which placed graduates with businesses. Actnow also made a significant difference taking Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly from zero to 99% broadband coverage".
"Most significantly it is the people - the graduates, employees and entrepreneurs -who are continuing to make Cornwall Pure Business, other European structural funding projects and Cornwall itself an economic success."
Reflecting on the support offered by Cornwall Pure Business and its partners were several successful relocators, such as Dr Joanna Henley, Scientist and Interpretation Specialist at SCIART Solutions: "The support I have received from CPB has been invaluable at all levels of my business. They have helped me source and attend networking opportunities, have given me constructive advice when tendering for public sector work and are always a friendly voice at the end of the phone when needed. I would highly recommend them to anyone contemplating relocating a business and a life to Cornwall."
Peter Graves, Technical Director of Channel Computing Limited, said: "We'd like to thank the team at CPB for their help, and for providing a friendly face when we were just starting up the business. It makes a lot of difference when a business is new and starting to find its way."
Andrew Holland explained: "It's all about changing perceptions of Cornwall and helping business leaders at home and abroad see it as a viable business location and the team at Cornwall Pure Business have been very successful in doing that." Marian Bond, Inward Investment Manager emphasised that "this has been achieved by gaining sustained publicity on a national basis, by showcasing the best of Cornish businesses out of county and organising regular networking events called 'I'd Rather be in Cornwall', in London with influential business speakers".
Additional assistance has been offered through support in helping find suitable commercial premises, accessing sources of complementary funding, support for broadband through the ActNow project, and introducing new businesses to key contacts in the county. John Berry, Managing Director of Cornwall Enterprise, thanked Andrew Holland and other private sector steering group members for their ongoing commitment to inward investment in Cornwall, saying that "businesses are now reaping the benefits of the creative and supportive conditions that exist here".
Cornwall Pure Business was a £1.9 million, four year project which was managed by Cornwall Enterprise, the economic development service of Cornwall County Council, and received joint investment from Cornwall County Council and the Objective One European Regional Development Fund. The project officially closes 31 December 2008, although Cornwall Pure Business will continue to offer support to businesses considering relocation after that date.
The project actively encouraged and assisted a total of 126 businesses to make the move to Cornwall, far exceeding the original target of 108 company relocations.
