Wave Power & Marine Energy

Wave Power & Marine Energy

Leading the way in marine renewable energy

With its extensive Atlantic coastline and powerful tides, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is a world centre for the development of wave and tidal energy. The UK government has invested nearly £19.5m in the region, approximately half of which was focused on Wave Hub at Hayle, on the North coast.

The Wave Hub is a new, ground breaking, £42m offshore facility providing a live working environment in the reliable Atlantic Ocean swell, for developers to test and refine their wave energy equipment. This unique project provides a large-scale facility for long-term testing of wave energy devices, with all of the energy generated fed into the National Grid.

Support for the industry comes from the Peninsular Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMaRE), a joint initiative from the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth which brings together a unique team of international researchers in marine energy and offers world-class facilities for R&D. These include the South West Moorings Test Facility, and the Dynamic Marine Component Testing Tank, all of which are available for business use.

With a pioneering maritime history, a pool of skilled marine engineers as well as an established supply chain of companies, Cornwall, quite simply, offers the best conditions for marine renewable energy in the UK.
