Medical & Healthcare

Medical & Healthcare

The county is home to a number of pioneering businesses engaged in the development and production of medical devices and advanced healthcare equipment in the UK. It is one of the UK sites of global life sciences company Pall and home to Research Instruments, a specialist in fertility technology and devices.

These innovative companies benefit not only from the skills of the workforce – nurtured through places like the Peninsula College – but also the presence of specialist regulatory consultancies and clinical trials experts. In fact, Cornwall has a reputation as an excellent location for such trials, with high response rates and ease of recruitment.

As well as these valuable assets, Cornwall provides established facilities to support testing and commercialising research, such as the Knowledge Spa, where new companies can take advantage of pre-incubation support.

Together, the combination of world-class facilities, availability of important healthcare skills and dedicated research sites makes Cornwall a sound choice for medical R&D.

  • Home to global leaders in biomedical and healthcare device manufacturing and development
  • Established research facilities
  • Responsive GP network to support clinical trials
  • Strong links with Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry
  • Supportive business environment including incubation facilities and regulatory consultancies

Medical and Healthcare Networks

European Centre for Environment and Human Health: The Centre will be based at the Cornwall campus of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry – one of the UK’s most innovative medical and dental schools. Part-funded by the EU Convergence programme, it will investigate the interconnections between environment and human health, focusing on issues such as evaluation of toxicological threats, clinical photobiology and health and wellbeing from the environment.

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry: This is a medical school with a difference- one that's founded on clinical skills training and contact with patients from day one. The school has provided a boost to Cornwall's already excellent healthcare provision and its infusion of research expertise and state-of-the-art facilities have played a big part in the ongoing expansion of the medical business sector.

The college is based on three campuses, at Plymouth, Exeter and Truro. Its Cornish campus forms part of the 'Knowledge Spa', an innovative development aimed at fostering a partnership between the county's health-related knowledge base and business profits.

The Knowledge Spa: The Knowledge Spa is part of a £14m complex at the Royal Cornwall Hospital site that also houses the Cornwall campus of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry. As well as facilities for research and development, lifelong learning and health promotion, the Knowledge Spa includes a business 'pre-incubation' facility. This gives vital support to inventors and innovators in the medical field, enabling them to develop their ideas into viable commercial products.

The Cornwall Medi-Park: Businesses growing on the back of leading-edge medical research and successful product development need room to expand. The Cornwall Medi-Park, a health-focused science park at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust site in Truro, will give them the best possible opportunity to do just that.

Companies locating to the Cornwall Medi-Park's high-quality premises will be exceptionally well placed to take advantage of the synergies and cross-fertilisation that result from bringing together a critical mass of research skills, business acumen and supportive infrastructure.
