Superfast Broadband in Cornwall

Over the last six years, thanks to European funding through Objective One, the actnow project in Cornwall has helped more than 10,000 businesses to make the most of broadband.

Today, the importance of broadband to the development and success of local businesses is at the forefront of economic growth strategies in the county. The Cornwall Development Company in partnership with BT, the Cornwall Council, the European Union and the South West of England Regional Development Agency, announced a £132 million broadband project in the fall of 2010, with the aim of connecting between 80 and 90 per cent of the homes and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to superfast broadband by 2014.

The area will benefit from the UK’s fastest broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps, and will set an example to other rural areas, showing what can be achieved through partnering and public funding. The project is set to benefit tens of thousands of local businesses, create 4000 new local jobs and protect a further 2000.

The Superfast Cornwall project will make Cornwall the first area in the UK to receive superfast broadband coverage, which will transform the economic performance of the county and make it one of the best connected regions in the world.

Companies like Cornwall based email marketing agency Jarrang now use broadband to work flexibly from different locations around the UK and the globe, increasing productivity and reducing office overheads. Managing Director Stafford Sumner says: "Although we are based in Cornwall, 70% of our business comes from outside the county and we're also able to work overseas, allowing us to turn around client projects faster than before by taking advantage of time zone differences. Everything is being linked to our UK operation through the use of cutting edge technology and services like VoIP to present a top class service interface to the world."
